Haleiwa Sea Spree event, 1968.

I was born in Seattle, Washington. Both my parents had been in Hawaii during World War II and loved the place, so they moved us there when I was five years old. Even though I wasn’t born there, I was raised there. It was really different being in Hawaii in the late ’50s/early ’60s, as Hawaii took off with the new statehood and the coming of the jet airplane, which opened up a tourist push in the islands.

Being a Haole kid in local public school was an eye-opener. I learned both the meaning of the “Aloha Spirit” and also the dark side of reverse racism. I learned how to deal with the different ethnic groups—local Hawaiians, Japanese, Filipinos, Kamaaina Haloes—and the keys to interacting with them all. I think it really laid the foundation for me to acquire a diplomatic approach as well as a high dosage of patience. I also learned what it’s like to be on the other side of the coin, on the receiving end. If you embrace all things Hawaiian, then you can really understand why things are the way they are and appreciate the good ones and, at the same time, comprehend—although maybe not condone—the downside of things.
